Full steam ahead for Novocastrian coffee scene
Glee Coffee Roasters along with Bombora Coffee Supplies hosted a massive latte art throwdown last month. The event was a raging success with 18 barista entrants and over 100 locals forming the cheer squad. The mixtape was a casual roar of early 00’s hip-hop to get the adrenaline pumping and the nostalgia flowing.
Baristas representing cafes all over Newcastle battled it out, two at a time, with a roll of the dice to decide their fate. A customised manual-paddle Slayer was the machine of choice, on which the baristas had 30 minutes to familiarise themselves. The possible freepour patterns were: Swan, Heart, Rosetta, Tulip, Waveheart and Free Choice. Each pour was then streamed live, to a big screen for the crowd to see.
The cafes represented on the night include: The Locomotive (Mayfield), Estabar, (Newcastle Beach), Mister Sister, (Westfield Kotara), Baked Uprising (Islington), Core Espresso (Cooks Hill) Common Circus (Belmont), One Penny Black (Hunter St), Dark Horse Espresso (Wickham), OneTwoSeven (Darby St), Moor (East End), The Press (Hunter St), Welsh Blacks (Cooks Hill), Custom Espresso (Speers Point), Mosh Pitt, Xtraction (Newcastle), Door 34 (Cardiff), Gyokoru (Kotara) and of course, Glee Coffee on Darby. The judging panel included Ben Gleeson, (Director, Glee Coffee) Joe Lemura (Bombora) plus a range of cafe owners and coffee lovers.
Well-loved barista Greg Watkinson of One Penny Black, was the reigning champ, followed closely by Luke Marshall, (Dark Horse, Welsh Blacks). Glee Coffee and Bombora Coffee Supplies sponsored the night, donating coffee and home brew gifts for every entrant and boutique filter gear for the winner.
Company wholesale director Jesse Milani, was thrilled with the event:
"Our main intention for these nights is to pull together the local specialty coffee community. It's great to see the industry moving forward and being appreciated by so many people.”
Keep pouring, keep drinking, Newcastle.
